THE SLOW TRAVEL NOTEBOOK · 3 MIN READ

Pack a little lighter.

Packing for a few days away is an exercise in deciding what matters. Start with what you will actually use, rather than every possible version of the trip.

Start with your day, not your wardrobe

Think about the kind of days you want to have. If most of them involve walking, comfortable shoes are a better starting point than a collection of outfits. Choose layers that work together, and a bag you are happy to carry when your accommodation is still a few streets away.

Make room for the practical things

Keep travel documents, any regular medication, chargers, and the small essentials you need close at hand. Check the weather before leaving and adapt your layers accordingly. A light bag is useful, but being comfortable and prepared matters more than meeting an arbitrary packing target.

A few things for doing nothing

There is something nice about bringing a book, a notebook, or a small camera. Pick one thing that encourages you to pause rather than another device that asks for your attention. A little space in your bag can also be a reminder to leave a little space in your day.
